SCHOOL’S HISTORY
In June 1998, construction began for a Primary school on a parcel of land, located on Alexandria Road, Sunset Park, north of Carmichael Road in the Blue Hills Constituency, New Providence, The Bahamas.
The pioneering staff was appointed in August 1998 and was stationed at Gerald Cash Primary School. At this time, foundation for what was to be a “Hallmark of Excellence” was laid, as goals and objectives were formulated.
As scheduled, on January 6, 1999, the school was commissioned and called Alexandria Primary after the street on which it was located. The principal, Mrs. Vanessa Munroe Coakley, Vice Principal Ms. Becamae Stubbs, Senior Master Mr. Lenox E. Green, eleven teachers and five support staff embraced 376 eager students ranging from grades one to five and welcomed them into this new learning environment. This began a journey, which sought to motivate, stimulate, challenge and inspire students to “Make their Better Best”.
Initially, the school started with the basic necessities – the students, the building and some furniture. Determined to make a positive difference, the administration persevered, constantly collaborating as it reshaped, restructured and provided an ambiance desired by all who dare to dream and to make the dream a reality.
The Principal, Mrs. Vanessa Coakley outlined the school’s rules and regulations to both students and parents. These were also written in the School’s Hand Book.
Garvin Tynes Primary School’s curricula emphasize a literature-based, thematic, integrated approach to learning. Connections are made across the various subjects and developmentally appropriated areas. Our student population in 2001 was seven hundred eighty two (782), three administrators, thirty six (36) teachers, two (2) clerical staff and nine (9) support staff members.
The building comprised of thirty (30) general classrooms, two (2) pre-school rooms, two (2) rooms for autistics students, library, computer lab, art and music rooms, an administrative block and four (4) shower blocks.
In addition to general academic subjects, programmes such as Computer, Science, Library Science, Spanish, Art and Craft, Music, Guidance and Counseling, and Physical Education were offered and continue today.
The Literacy Enrichment Program was designed to complement our vision to improve students’ literacy and numeracy skills.
The School’s name changed from Alexandria Primary to Garvin Tynes Primary in 2001. The school is named in honour of an outstanding educator Mr. Garvin Jervis Tynes whose name is synonymous with excellence.
Additions to Garvin Tynes Primary School are a north wing to house The Center for Autism opened in 2006 and a trailer classroom at the rear of the school that accommodates a grade one class. Due to the increase in student population three classrooms were constructed at the rear of the campus in 2009. Two of the shower rooms were removed to create access to these new classrooms. The other two shower rooms were converted to an office and storage space for the Physical Education Department.
The Garvin Tynes Primary School today consists of four (4) administrators. The Principal is Mrs. Naressa Miller- Hart, Vice Principals, Mr. Lenox Green & Mrs. Jacqueline Humes and Senior Mistress, Mrs. Maud Johnson and Acting Senior Mistress Mrs. Zelda Hanna. There are forty-five (45) Teachers, two (2) Guidance Counselors, eleven (11) Teacher Aides, thirteen (13) Custodial Staff, three (3) Clerical Staff, and six (6) Security Officers. The student population is nine hundred and fifty-six (956).
